Practical tips for talking to your doctor about sleep apnoea

Obstructive sleep apnoea affects approximately one billion people around the world.1 Looking for pointers on starting the conversation with confidence? Our downloadable tip sheet has you covered.

Recognise the signs of sleep apnoea.

Sleep apnoea is a condition where your breathing slows down or stops for short periods while you sleep.

These common sleep apnoea symptoms can disrupt your life.

Snoring

Snoring is a common symptom of sleep apnoea that occurs when the neck muscles relax and the throat partly closes.2

Pauses in breathing

You may experience episodes in which you stop breathing when asleep. A sleeping partner may tell you, or you may notice you’re waking up gasping or feeling short of breath.3

Excessive daytime sleepiness

A lack of restful sleep can make it hard to get through the day, leading you to feel unusually tired and even needing naps throughout the day.3

Depression

Depression and other mood changes, such as irritability and anxiety, can signal a problem with sleep.3

Weight gain

Lack of restorative sleep can disrupt hunger and metabolism hormones, increasing appetite and weight gain.4

Morning headaches

Regular morning headaches may indicate you’re not getting enough oxygen at night due to apnoeas.5

Dry mouth

Waking up with a dry mouth could mean your airway was obstructed, causing mouth breathing.6

Waking up gasping

When your airway is blocked, you might gasp or choke, leading to a sudden awakening to restore airflow.2

Difficulty focusing

Sleep deprivation from apnoeas can reduce sleep quality, making it hard to focus or remember things.7

If you have private health insurance, it is your responsibility to submit a claim directly through your private health insurance provider (if applicable). We can issue you with a receipt to support your claim.

Home sleep apnoea testing is also covered by the NHS although wait times may vary. If you suspect you may have sleep apnoea, you can visit your doctor to start the process. Our handy tip sheet may help you start the conversation.

Home sleep apnoea tests accurately diagnose moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea about 90% of the time, but in some cases, people have underlying health conditions, like heart or lung disease, that require a more comprehensive sleep study in a clinic.8,9

While lifestyle changes can be beneficial, your treatment options will depend on the severity of your condition. Positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy is considered the gold standard for treating sleep apnoea, but your doctor will help determine the most appropriate treatment for your needs. Learn more about PAP therapy here.

Before your appointment, take a moment to reflect on your symptoms, when they started, and any changes you experienced over time. It can also be helpful to have a list of your current medications on hand. Choose a quiet space with strong wi-fi or cellular service so you can have a smooth conversation without interruption.

The home sleep apnoea testing kit includes a breathing sensor and oximeter, which is used with a simple mobile app (a mobile device can be provided if needed).
